South PTC Update 08.04.17

Hello South families!  Can you believe its almost time to start back up with a new school year?!  We’ve been hard at work over the summer and have some fun planned for the school year. Below you will see some important dates for August & September and some other upcoming things we are working on will be announced soon!  So, who is on the PTC this year? Well let me tell you!

I’ll start with myself, your favorite blog writing and Facebook posting friend- Jackie Stone.  This is my 2nd year back on the PTC serving as the Secretary and Activities Coordinator.  When I’m not assisting the PTC,  I work full time as an Executive Coordinator for Experience Grand Rapids, the convention and visitors bureau for Grand Rapids & Kent County.  I’m married to Ryan, a civil Engineer for Prein & Newhof, and we have 3 children, Cameron (2nd), Abigail (1st), and Emma (4 year old preschool), and 2 very old dogs- Levi & Lola.

Next up is your President, Alison Edidin- Alison was raised in Grandville and even attended South for elementary school. She went on to college at GVSU. Alison works part-time as an RN Case Manager in the ICU at St Mary’s and also as a forensic nurse at the YWCA. She is married to Blake who is a Chicago native. He works as a realtor with Five Star Realty. Alison has 4 sons, Noah will be a junior, Graham is in 8th grade, Lucas is in 3rd grade in Mrs Messina’s class and Jacob is going into kindergarten. This is Alison’s second year serving as PTC president.

Lemmon Family Pic

My name is Jessica Lemmon, this is my 1st year on the PTC Board as Co-Vice President. I work full time as a Realtor with Patriot Realty. I’m married to Sam, an Assistant Principal in West Ottawa Public Schools. We have 2 children – Caden, going into 4th grade and Madison, going into 2nd grade. We’ve had a busy summer training our new puppy, Izzy, and also have a pet cat, Marley. I enjoy being involved in my kids’ day to day life at South Elementary as well as being crafty and working on projects around our home!

Hi, my name is Sarah Stevens, and I am one of your PTC Vice Presidents.  My husband BIll works for Gordon Food Service and the Grandville Fire Department.  We have four boys, Jacob- going into 2nd grade and Joseph, Ryan and Caleb will be in 4 year old preschool.  I love South, we have such amazing staff and students! I am looking forward to meeting and volunteering with more awesome South families this year!

My name is Jennifer Johnston. This is my first year as treasurer on the board. I like crafting, and spending time outdoors with my family! I have been married to my husband Mike for 10 years. We have two children, Logan who is going into 2nd grade and Kaylin who will be in 4 year old preschool. I am excited for a great year at South.

My name is Beth DeLozier, and this is my first year on PTC board.  I am Volunteer Coordinator as well as being in charge of Restaurant Night.  I’m a stay at home mom, and I’m married to my husband Jason with whom I also help run our own remodeling business.  We have three boys Justin who is 21, Jacob is 12 & entering 6th grade, and Jackson is 9 & entering 4th grade.  We are fairly new to the school as we moved to South in March of 2017, my children also attended Grand View in the past, so Bulldog pride runs strong in our family!  When I’m not chasing my brood of boys I enjoy beach volleyball, camping, & bargain hunting.

Principal Ryan Roberts asked that I share this letter with all of you to introduce some of the new teachers you’ll see at Soth and what classes they will be in.  I hope to get a chance to meet them all soon and put together a short paragraph on each one (Like what we did above!) Read the letter here: Letter from Principal Roberts

The final assignments for classes should be arriving today/tomorrow or early next week.  Make sure to sign up to be a room parent if you are interested!  CLICK HERE  Room parents are responsible for getting volunteers and donations from the class for the Halloween, Christmas and Valentines party, and also coordinating Teacher Appreciation Week.  We send out the theme for the week and you can collect money or assist your class as needed!

We have been working on some fun ideas for the upcoming school year and we hope you will continue to support the PTC so we can continue to provide support to the school. The PTC SUPPORTS SOUTH with total or partial funding for classroom parties, library books and other support, field trips, September One Time Teacher Gifts, Popcorn, Teacher Appreciation Week, Muffins with Moms/Donuts with Dads, Field Day, Girls on the Run, and Teacher Mini-Grants.  In addition to raising and providing funds, the PTC helps plan ACTIVITIES AND EVENTS like Spirit Days, Crazy Hair/Hat Days, PJ Days, Skating Parties, Mother/Son Events, the Guys and Dolls Dance, and new this year, Mom’s Night Out and a Carnival. We are also always looking for more other fun activities for South students and their families.

One event that I’ve been working on and am really excited about is a Solar Eclipse and Slip & Slide Party!  It will be Monday August 21st from 1:30pm-3:30pm.  Its a half day of school.  So students will be able to go home as usual.  We will invite South parents to bring their students back up to the school starting at 1:30pm to slip & slide down the hill on the side of the school by the garden.  At appx 2:20pm we will also be able to witness a solar eclipse!  You can read more about the eclipse HERE  Start working on those eclipse viewers so you can safely view the eclipse! (I’m on the hunt for a bulk order of glasses, and also large plastic slip & slide material-more info to come, if you have a hookup on either thing, call or text me 616-366-1760!)

I’m also happy to announce that we would like to hold a Consignment Sale this fall!  I’m still working on a final date with district administration, but save your gently used kid clothing, toys, anything you’d want to sell.  You’ll be able to rent a booth space and table to sell indoors at South!  Home businesses are also welcome!  I hope to have final date confirmed soon!

The carnival will be back!  Last year was our first year and we received such positive feedback, how could I not do it again!  I hope more people will volunteer this year after seeing how great it was last year.  We don’t ask for a lot of your time for this event so you can still enjoy it with your family.  Ideas are always welcome, please contact me- Jackie!

Here is a snapshot at August and September:

Hey South families!

I’ve been a little quieter these last few weeks as we rolled thru the final days of school and our final PTC events.  We hope everyone enjoyed the Muffins with Moms and Donuts with Dads events!  We cannot do these events without YOU!  Thank you for participating in dining nights and Walk-A-Thon and Fundraisers and Spirit Days.  Without those fundraisers big & small, we wouldn’t have funding and wouldn’t be able to buy the delicious donuts!  So thank YOU for your continued support!

We hope to continue doing all the fun events next year- Walk-A-Thon and Family BBQ in the fall- we are waiting to hear when open house dates will be!  The winter Carnival again!  Lots of Popcorn Fridays and Spirit Days! Plus skating nights, dining fundraiser nights, and lots more!

Make sure to join the South Elementary PTC Facebook group.  Once we have dates, I’ll be able to post them there.  And the events give you such a nice reminder 🙂

As it is with the end of the school year, the 6th graders move on, new fresh face kindergarteners appear, and sometimes, a few staff members move on to the next stage of their careers and lives.  Lani Pleyel, the amazing librarian and Sue Hjort, the awesome 2nd grade teacher are both retiring!  Enjoy retirement!  Wendy VanderWest, our trusty rockstar of a secretary in the office at South is moving up to the high school. Thank you all 3, for loving on our children and teaching them!

Also, a thank you to 3 PTC Board members who are moving off the board- Kristy GIbney, Victoria Talsma, and Samantha Siegert.  Thank you for all your hard work and guidance to help create programs and exciting things for the kids to do!  They will still be volunteering around the school at our events and activities in the next school year though!

If you have any Campbells Soup labels for Education please send them in by Friday- the program ends this year, so we will get those remaining ones sent in.  I’m also happy to send in one last round of BoxTops if you send them in by Friday (then they wont sit and collect dust in your kitchen!)  As always, don’t forget to use the BoxTops app to scan your receipts and earn more BoxTops for the school!  You can also turn in all Family Fare & D&W Receipts for their fundraising program.  If you shop on Amazon use the site- and click on ‘chose your organization’ and select Grandville Parent Teachers Children South Elementary.  And finally- the Shoparoo app- take pictures of your receipts and we earn points and they send us $!  Easy way to fundraiser for the school over the summer!

Don’t forget, this Friday is a half day for the last day!  Enjoy summer everyone and see you in a couple months!

There will be a school wide BE NICE Assembly on March 27th!  be nice. is a positive anti-bullying initiative designed to spread awareness surrounding the issues of bullying and the importance of treating people with civility community-wide. By creating awareness, we will minimize and reduce the devastating effects of bullying such as depression and suicide.  Bullying is a significant issue within our schools and communities both locally and nationally. The be nice. campaign strives to educate students and community members about how simply “being nice” is an effective way to promote a safe and civil environment within the school and community.
