South PTC News 10.15.17

Good afternoon South Families!  Heres whats going on or coming up-

First off, we need to remind every one of the drop off/pick up line rule- No parking and exiting your vehicle in these lines.  We’ve heard complaints (and even witnessed ourselves) people pulling into the drop off line in front of the school, parking their car and then standing in line with their student.  No No No.  If you need to exit your vehicle, then you need to find a parking spot.  If you need to get out of your car to unbuckle a child, then you need to find a parking spot.  Here is the reminder paper and map that was sent home last year and will be sent home again this week to remind everyone. pick-up-drop-off  and the South Drop-Off and Pick-Up Map

This week is our round 2 of the Orange Leaf Challenge.  South Elementary is up against Bursley Elementary in Jenison and they came in really high for their first round, so South families will need to eat a lot of FroYo this week for us to advance to round 3!  South earns 20% of our South sales this week.  Stop in to the Grandville Orange Leaf and put your receipt into the South bucket so we earn credit for the sale! Orange Leaf is off Rivertown Parkway near Wilson in the strip mall by the Family Fare and Qdoba.  It should be a nice week so perfect for FroYo 🙂  Stop by between now and Saturday October 21st!  I will update middle of the week on our facebook page.

Starting tomorrow- our Book Exchange drop off will begin!  Have your student bring in some gently used books from home.  We will collect books until October 26th.  The students who have brought in books will then have the chance to “Shop” for new to them books on Friday October 27th (Shop date pushed back due to October 20th being a half day)  If you have books at home and your student does not need to shop for any, or just a lesser amount, please include a note with your books.  I will be at the school main entrance at drop off each day this week and next to collect books, and write down student & teacher name.  But if you could include a note with the books you send in a Meijer bag, that may be helpful if it’s a busy day or if your student forgets to drop them off in the morning.  if you’d like to help, you can sign up here:

Tuesday is a Jets Pizza Fundraiser night!  FundraiserFlyer_Grandville_Oct17

Tuesday & Thursday are also Parent/Teacher Conferences nights.  I’ll get the current Lost & Found items hung up near the main entrance because those bins are already filling up.  Please plan to swing by and take a look for any familiar clothing.
We also love our teachers, so we bring them food!  Its two very busy nights for them, so we have food available in the teacher’s lounge both days.  If you are bringing in food, please get it to the school by 11am on the day it’s needed.  You may send it in early, just put a note on it so the office knows what it is for.

Box Tops are being counted this week, we will have an announcement soon on which class had the most.  Keep saving them!  We will do another BoxTops drive in the winter for their next submission deadline in February.  If you have any that expire by the end of this year, please drop them off or send them in to the school and we will include them with this submission.
Keep sending in the Family Fare/Spartan Stores receipts as well!  I’m still collecting those for their Direct Your Dollars campaign.  Once we get to $150,000 in receipts, the school will earn $1,000.  We’ve got a way to go, but thankfully there’s no expiration on them.

Friday October 20th is a half day- dismissal at 11:36am.  It’s also a PTC Meeting day- 9am in the Teachers Lounge -everyone is welcome & encouraged to attend!
Friday is also Kindergarten Silly Sock day to celebrate the letter “S”.

Saturday October 21st is our first Vendor Sale Event!  The school will be full of people selling tons of gently used kids clothing and homemade items along with some home based businesses. Theres no cost for admission.  And booth spaces were only $15.  We still have room for a few more if you’re interested!  It’s the same day as the high school craft show, so we hope to get a lot of cross-traffic.  If you can’t make it to shop, please consider sharing our event to help spread the word, or invite your friends to the event on the South Elementary (Public) Facebook page.

Theres no school on Monday October 23rd!

Friday October 27th we have 3 dining fundraiser options for you.  Our dining coordinator is working hard on setting up new places and giving you lots of options for your family!  The 27th will feature Potbelly Sandwiches, or Panda Express, or Tom & Chee!  Flyers will be coming home!

Tuesday October 31st is Halloween and of course our classrooms will be having their class parties and parade.  The Parade is at 2pm and parents/grandparent are welcome to attend.

Thanks to everyone who shopped or helped with the Book Fair!  The poster contest winners were announced and I can’t wait to see their artwork displayed in the library.  And the change drive was a success!  Change was collected for a school in Houston that lost their library during the Hurricane.  Mrs McGulicuddy set a goal of $350, and Principal Roberts even threw in an added incentive if the kids raised $350, he would dress like Pete the Cat.  Well the school went above & beyond and raised $600!  So Pete the Cat will be making an appearance.  I’ll be sure to share the date and pictures!

Thanks for your support, have a great week!

Our biggest fundraiser event The Annual Walk-A-Thon is coming up on Friday September 8th.  Students will walk laps with their class during the school day.  The PTC will give each student a snow cone upon completion! We could use some help with the Snow Cones if you have some time to spare, sign up HERE!  If every student is able to raise $50, we will hit our funding goal for the school year!
The Info sheet, rules and pledge forms are available here and were also sent home in Friday folders! Walk a Thon info SheetWalk a thon Rules, and Walk a Thon pledge Form

The Free Family BBQ is that night from 4:30pm-7pm.  Each family member will receive a free hot dog, chips and a drink as a thank you from the PTC for a successful fundraiser!  We will have fun inflatable for the evening too!  We could use help at the event, sign up HERE!

The Important Dates flyer came home this past Thursday and we are working on adding a few more things still.  Look for an updated copy to come home in another week or two.  I will post here once it is ready!  We are also looking into the possibility of changing the Vendor & Consignment Sale date.  Since our original date falls on a long weekend, we may move it up into late September.  You’d be able to rent a booth space for a Saturday  during the sale and sell your gently used kids clothing/toys, or if you’re a vendor, you could sell your products!  Look for more information to post very soon!

Also, I’m working on a fundraiser of Grandville clothing and items.  I hope to have sample sizing in the next few weeks and orders available later this fall to arrive before winter break.

Since we have so many new families joining us now, I thought it best to remind everyone of the easy no cost ways to raise funds for our school!

South PTC News 8.20.17

Happy First Day of School Eve!

Tomorrow, Monday August 21st is a half day.  The day begins at 8:28am and 1/2 dismissal is 11:36am.  Full day dismissal is 3:41pm.  For the first week, expect the parking lots and drop off/pick up to be busier than usual.  Many parents will be walking their younger students in for their first day.  Some teachers have moved rooms.  First grade is now in the middle hallway and not the hallway to the right. Here is the parking information from the letter sent home last year: “First, we ask every family to only do one drop off. Secondly, we encourage everyone to use the new drop off loop in the parking lot. It is 2 lanes, so the curbside lane is for drop off and the inside lane is for passing through. Do not leave your vehicle along the curbside lane. Third, please drop off in the most efficient way possible. The front office entrance is for Y5s through 2nd grade, the front East end doors are for 3rd and 4th grade students, and the rear East end doors are for the entrance of our 5th and 6th grade students. We ask that any family that has a student 3rd grade or older to do your family drop off in the parking lot. We are asking our older siblings to walk with any Y5-2nd grade siblings to the office doors until everyone is comfortable. We have staff members posted on the front two corners of the building and a crossing guard out front as well. Any families with only Y5s through 2nd grade students are still encouraged to use the drop off zone by the front office.”

The lunch menus for August and September are posted HERE and begin on Tuesday August 22nd.  Dont forget to load money into your students lunch account HERE!

Monday afternoon is also our Slip and Slide and Solar Eclipse party!  Bring your children back up to school at 1:30pm to enjoy a slip and slide.  There will be snacks for sale as well!  Pop, Bottled water and Candy bars for $1 each.  Sno Cones, glasses of lemonade & Sun Tea and bags of chips for .50 cents each.  The solar eclipse glasses are sold out at this time.  if you pre-ordered, come to the table with your money to claim your glasses.  Please bring cash for snacks and glasses.  I am sorry we couldn’t get glasses for absolutely everyone.  A few weeks ago when I ordered, I never thought I’d sell all 400.  And I try to walk a line to balance the money I spend which is donated from you parents, and do my best to not waste those donations.

Friday August 25th there is no school.
Monday August 28th will be picture day.  Flyers and information will be coming home this week!
Tuesday August 29th will be the 1st-6th grade open house from 6pm-7pm.
Friday September 1st & Monday September 4th there is no school.
Friday September 8th is Walk-A-Thon!  Flyers will be coming home for students to collect donations.  That night is also our free family BBQ.  We will have bounce houses, a mechanical bull, and everyone that attends will be one free hot dog, chips and a pop.  Other food items will be available for purchase. The event runs 4:30pm-7:30pm.

I hope you find our Facebook group helpful!  Make sure you have the group set to allow notifications when we post information.  We try to screen the posts and make sure it is school related or not something that has already been addressed.  I also make event pages for important dates.  I use that function quite often.  Set your phone calendar to sync with your Facebook calendar so you will remember those important dates!

And welcome new parents to our school, or new parents with their first children starting with us.  Please take a moment and read through older posts to hear who is on the PTC board this year and the ways you can help us raise money.  We hope to make this a fantastic year!  2017-2018 New Year Letter  Intro to South PTC

South PTC Update 08.04.17

Hello South families!  Can you believe its almost time to start back up with a new school year?!  We’ve been hard at work over the summer and have some fun planned for the school year. Below you will see some important dates for August & September and some other upcoming things we are working on will be announced soon!  So, who is on the PTC this year? Well let me tell you!

I’ll start with myself, your favorite blog writing and Facebook posting friend- Jackie Stone.  This is my 2nd year back on the PTC serving as the Secretary and Activities Coordinator.  When I’m not assisting the PTC,  I work full time as an Executive Coordinator for Experience Grand Rapids, the convention and visitors bureau for Grand Rapids & Kent County.  I’m married to Ryan, a civil Engineer for Prein & Newhof, and we have 3 children, Cameron (2nd), Abigail (1st), and Emma (4 year old preschool), and 2 very old dogs- Levi & Lola.

Next up is your President, Alison Edidin- Alison was raised in Grandville and even attended South for elementary school. She went on to college at GVSU. Alison works part-time as an RN Case Manager in the ICU at St Mary’s and also as a forensic nurse at the YWCA. She is married to Blake who is a Chicago native. He works as a realtor with Five Star Realty. Alison has 4 sons, Noah will be a junior, Graham is in 8th grade, Lucas is in 3rd grade in Mrs Messina’s class and Jacob is going into kindergarten. This is Alison’s second year serving as PTC president.

Lemmon Family Pic

My name is Jessica Lemmon, this is my 1st year on the PTC Board as Co-Vice President. I work full time as a Realtor with Patriot Realty. I’m married to Sam, an Assistant Principal in West Ottawa Public Schools. We have 2 children – Caden, going into 4th grade and Madison, going into 2nd grade. We’ve had a busy summer training our new puppy, Izzy, and also have a pet cat, Marley. I enjoy being involved in my kids’ day to day life at South Elementary as well as being crafty and working on projects around our home!

Hi, my name is Sarah Stevens, and I am one of your PTC Vice Presidents.  My husband BIll works for Gordon Food Service and the Grandville Fire Department.  We have four boys, Jacob- going into 2nd grade and Joseph, Ryan and Caleb will be in 4 year old preschool.  I love South, we have such amazing staff and students! I am looking forward to meeting and volunteering with more awesome South families this year!

My name is Jennifer Johnston. This is my first year as treasurer on the board. I like crafting, and spending time outdoors with my family! I have been married to my husband Mike for 10 years. We have two children, Logan who is going into 2nd grade and Kaylin who will be in 4 year old preschool. I am excited for a great year at South.

My name is Beth DeLozier, and this is my first year on PTC board.  I am Volunteer Coordinator as well as being in charge of Restaurant Night.  I’m a stay at home mom, and I’m married to my husband Jason with whom I also help run our own remodeling business.  We have three boys Justin who is 21, Jacob is 12 & entering 6th grade, and Jackson is 9 & entering 4th grade.  We are fairly new to the school as we moved to South in March of 2017, my children also attended Grand View in the past, so Bulldog pride runs strong in our family!  When I’m not chasing my brood of boys I enjoy beach volleyball, camping, & bargain hunting.

Principal Ryan Roberts asked that I share this letter with all of you to introduce some of the new teachers you’ll see at Soth and what classes they will be in.  I hope to get a chance to meet them all soon and put together a short paragraph on each one (Like what we did above!) Read the letter here: Letter from Principal Roberts

The final assignments for classes should be arriving today/tomorrow or early next week.  Make sure to sign up to be a room parent if you are interested!  CLICK HERE  Room parents are responsible for getting volunteers and donations from the class for the Halloween, Christmas and Valentines party, and also coordinating Teacher Appreciation Week.  We send out the theme for the week and you can collect money or assist your class as needed!

We have been working on some fun ideas for the upcoming school year and we hope you will continue to support the PTC so we can continue to provide support to the school. The PTC SUPPORTS SOUTH with total or partial funding for classroom parties, library books and other support, field trips, September One Time Teacher Gifts, Popcorn, Teacher Appreciation Week, Muffins with Moms/Donuts with Dads, Field Day, Girls on the Run, and Teacher Mini-Grants.  In addition to raising and providing funds, the PTC helps plan ACTIVITIES AND EVENTS like Spirit Days, Crazy Hair/Hat Days, PJ Days, Skating Parties, Mother/Son Events, the Guys and Dolls Dance, and new this year, Mom’s Night Out and a Carnival. We are also always looking for more other fun activities for South students and their families.

One event that I’ve been working on and am really excited about is a Solar Eclipse and Slip & Slide Party!  It will be Monday August 21st from 1:30pm-3:30pm.  Its a half day of school.  So students will be able to go home as usual.  We will invite South parents to bring their students back up to the school starting at 1:30pm to slip & slide down the hill on the side of the school by the garden.  At appx 2:20pm we will also be able to witness a solar eclipse!  You can read more about the eclipse HERE  Start working on those eclipse viewers so you can safely view the eclipse! (I’m on the hunt for a bulk order of glasses, and also large plastic slip & slide material-more info to come, if you have a hookup on either thing, call or text me 616-366-1760!)

I’m also happy to announce that we would like to hold a Consignment Sale this fall!  I’m still working on a final date with district administration, but save your gently used kid clothing, toys, anything you’d want to sell.  You’ll be able to rent a booth space and table to sell indoors at South!  Home businesses are also welcome!  I hope to have final date confirmed soon!

The carnival will be back!  Last year was our first year and we received such positive feedback, how could I not do it again!  I hope more people will volunteer this year after seeing how great it was last year.  We don’t ask for a lot of your time for this event so you can still enjoy it with your family.  Ideas are always welcome, please contact me- Jackie!
