South PTC News 3.12.17

Hey there South families!  Heres the latest & greatest-
First off- Thanks to Jessica Lemmon, her Daddy Daughter Dance Committee and all the volunteers who helped Friday night at the dance!

We also had a great evening PTC Meeting on Wednesday last week.  Thanks to everyone who was able to make it out!

Thursday March 16th & Tuesday March 21st are Parent Teacher Conferences. Thursday the 16 Food sign up for Teachers is HERE.  Tuesday the 21st sign up is HERE.  Thanks for volunteering to bring food in for teachers!  They really appreciate being able to grab something good to eat quickly on the busy conference nights!

Lost & Found!  Its a growing pile- please take a moment when you are in for conferences to look over the tables and see if you can identify any of your children’s clothing!

Toilet paper Tubes- We are looking for any toilet paper tubes to assist with planting marigolds for our garden, please send them in to the office as soon as possible!  Our Garden Champion Amy Gardine will be coordinating with each grade to paint self portraits on our fence pickets.  Its going to look great!

Mother Son night is the 29th, it should be great fun.  If you can spare 30 minutes (or more) to volunteer in a certain area- Sign Up HERE!

There will be a school wide BE NICE Assembly on March 27th!  be nice. is a positive anti-bullying initiative designed to spread awareness surrounding the issues of bullying and the importance of treating people with civility community-wide. By creating awareness, we will minimize and reduce the devastating effects of bullying such as depression and suicide.  Bullying is a significant issue within our schools and communities both locally and nationally. The be nice. campaign strives to educate students and community members about how simply “being nice” is an effective way to promote a safe and civil environment within the school and community.

Keep sending in those food items for the Kids Food Basket Donation Drive by the 3rd graders!  The food we are collecting is- 100% Fruit Juice Boxes, Fruit Cups or pouches, or applesauce cups or pouches, granola bars, cracker packs, small raisin boxes, quart sizer zipper lock bags.

Also feel free to keep sending in BoxTops and Spartan Stores/Family Fare and D&W Receipts!  We will have a place for all of these to go just past the office next tot he Lost & Found.  I’ll post a picture on our facebook group this week!  Other easy ways to raise money for our school is using the Shoparoo app to snap pictures of your receipts, and also, using and selecting the charity “Grandville Parent Support Organizations Parents-Teachers-Children S Element” and every time you shop Amazon- use that site and we will get a portion back!

We are looking for a trophy case to display all our students achievements and trophy’s.  If you see a display case or something similar, please let one of us know!

2017/18 School Year PTC Board- we’ve collected some nomination forms from next year and will do our official vote at our April PTC Meeting so new members can attend the May meeting (The last of this school year).

Mr Roberts reported that the fans we got earlier in the school year are about 75% installed- so the classrooms will have fans come warmer weather!  The rest should be finished up over the next few weeks!  Its amazing we were able to provide these with YOUR financial support!  THANK YOU!

South PTC News 3.5.17

Good evening (or morning/afternoon) South families!  Heres whats going on & coming up that you should know about!

Third graders went around last week to talk to the classes about their donation drive for Kids Food Basket.  Located inside the school at the main doors are some boxes, we would like to encourage anyone who is able to send in items for the Supper Packs that Kids Food Basket distributes.  KFB serves nearly 7500 kids in the GR area every DAY!  This is the 8th year the third grade classes have participated in this donation drive!  An event has been created on the Facebook page and we have a goal of 1000 supper packs.  We will keep everyone updated on what things are needed if we are short on any items.  i know with our amazing community, we can reach this goal!  Friday March 24th is Wear Orange Day- Orange is the color for hunger awareness.

Monday March 6- Half Day!  Dismissal at 11:40am.

Wednesday March 8- Evening South PTC meeting 6:30 at the school!  Based on popular demand, our March meeting will be an evening one!  The Nomination forms went home for next years Board members.  please send those back in this week so we can begin contacting those who were nominated to judge their interest and answer any questions.  We will discuss/vote at the April meeting. board-nomination-form-17-18

Friday March 10th- Daddy Daughter Enchanted Evening! Starts at 6:30pm.  Please remember, do not sign your children out early to get ready.  Volunteers are still needed, sign up HERE  We’ve had a few inquiries about tickets at the door, we will accept, but we cannot plan ahead for food for those who do not pre-purchase tickets.  Please get money in asap this week.  Or you may contact Jessica Lemmon- 616-460-1690 or find her on facebook.

March 16 & 21- Parent Teacher Conferences!  You should have received your time on Friday.  Make sure to sign your slip and send it back so the teacher knows you’re confirmed!

March 21 is also another Jets pizza Fundraiser night.  Simple & easy dinner pick up if you have conferences that night!  Just order pizza and present our flyer when you pick up- we only get credit for the orders with the flyer, so make sure to turn it in!

March 29th- Moth & Son Night of fun!  We have reserved space at Rivertown Sports from 5:30pm-8pm.  Its close by and has a huge skating rink inside.  They dont have skate rentals, but you can bring your own “wheels”- Rollskates, rollerblades, scooters or skateboards (No bikes). Bring your own helmets or pads too.  Also they have a basketball hoop, we have reserved a bounce house and a Quarterback Blitz throwing game.  We will have the music going and the boys can be boys!  We also contacted Home Depot to come & bring one of their How To Sessions on site for us that evening, so from 630-730 they will be showing mom & son teams how to build birdhouses.  We will also have pizza & pop, so make sure to send in your tickets and money so we know how much to buy!  Flyers just went home on Friday and are available on our facebook page under the events tab- or use the search function for mother son night! April 11- Buffalo Wild Wings Fundraiser- one of our most popular fundraiser nights.  Flyers will be coming home before Spring break.
April 14- Hat Day/Crazy Hair Spirit Day- send in $1 to wear your hat or a crazy hair do at school all day!
April 14th- PTC Meeting-9am Teachers Lounge- We will be discussing next years Board.
April 18- Terry Hall Skate night!
April 28- Jets Pizza Fundraiser night
May 1-5- Teacher Appreciation Week- We ask each Room Parent to plan something nice for their teacher.  Most teachers have filled out a “Favorite Things” sheet, that is located by the PTC Mailbox in the office and tells you what type of things they like, so ideas for gifts or gift cards can be found there!
May 12- Muffins with Mom (7:45am-8:20am) Flyer will be sent home closer to RSVP so we can plan amount of food.
June 2- Donuts with Dad (7:45am-8:20am) Flyer will be sent home closer to RSVP so we can plan amount of food.

South PTC News 2.26.17

Hey South Families!  Here are the latest updates!
BoxTops contest!  Super mom Amy A. finished counting all the BoxTops submitted and got them sent out.  Grand Total of 8,684 Total Box Tops!  Which gets the school $868.40!  She had a lot of expired ones to remove from our mailing, so please make sure to check those as you send them in and we will be sending in our BoxTops much more often now that we have someone willing to coordinate!  So the winning classroom was Mrs Hjort with 944 total BoxTops!  Congrats Mrs Hjort, your class wins a Pizza & Ice Cream party!

PTC Nomination forms went home for the 2017-18 School Year.  If you or someone you know may be interested, please nominate them.  Someone from the current Board will reach out to them, or we are happy to speak with anyone on any questions they may have. board-nomination-form-17-18  Forms are due back next Friday the 10th and will be discussed and voted on at our April meeting.

Well its nearly March, here is what the upcoming calendar looks like for PTC events!

Friday March 3 is a Popcorn Friday- all students receive a bag of popcorn free of charge from the PTC!  Thanks to all the volunteers helping to make Popcorn every month.  The kids really enjoy it!

March 6th is a half day!

March 8th- Evening PTC Meeting at the school- 6:30pm!  We hope more people can join us for this meeting!

March 10th-Daddy Daughter Enchanted Evening Dance- Make sure to get your ticket orders in by this Friday March 3rd so the committee can plan for the right number of people.  Volunteers are still needed!  Sign up HERE!

March 16th & 21st are Parent Teacher Conferences.  Date preference forms came home on Friday.  Please make sure to send those back this week so teachers can begin planning.  We will be sending a SignUp link for anyone who may want to donate food for the teachers.

Just a reminder- Muffins with Moms is scheduled for May 12th and Donuts with Dads is June 2nd.  Flyers will be coming home after Spring Break for people to send in with their RSVP so we can plan enough muffins & donuts!  Tentative time is 7:45am til 8:20am.  Please plan to stay with your child until school begins as we do not have the ability to watch children!

In case you missed the post in our Facebook group- Amy G. announced South was awarded a grant towards the school garden!  “The Grandville Education Foundation grant was a success!  We received $2,421.47 toward the cost of building the fence and the 400+ pickets! We will need some help with paint and brushes, but we will keep you up to date on that! Looking forward to your kiddos making this garden their own! Thanks to Julie Moore and the GEF for pushing this forward!”

Monday- No school for mid-winter break!  Enjoy the beautiful non-winter weather!
Thursday- Jets pizza Fundraiser night, order Jets and turn in your flyer and we get a portion of the proceeds.  Handing in the flyer is very important!  Its posted on the Facebook page too! (Sorry- original Flyer mistakenly said Friday the 23rd.  Its really Thursday the 23rd!)

Our awesome PTC member Amy A. is hard at work counting BoxTops and we should know the winner of the class pizza & ice cream party this week!  In order to make her job easier- please remember we cannot send in expired BoxTops. Now that Amy has volunteered to coordinate the BoxTops, we will be sending them in at least twice a school year.  And keep sending those Spartan Stores- Family Fare- D&W Receipts.  I love seeing those come in, such an easy way to earn cash for our school!

Thanks to everyone who volunteered for Valentines Parties last week!  Special thanks to all the Room Parents this year, we know its a lot of work and we appreciate you all!  If you need to turn in any receipts for items you could not get donated by other classroom parents, please fill out the form and send it in to the PTC box.  Our treasurer will get a check cut to you, max $25 per class per party. ptc-expense-reimbursement-request-for-parent-use

South PTC News 2.12.17

Hi everyone!  We had another great turnout on Friday at the February PTC Meeting.  Here’s some of the things we discussed and some upcoming dates to be aware of!

-Huge news- South won $10,000 from a Campbells Soup competition online that Samantha Siegert submitted the school for.  If you see her, say Thank you!  Mr Roberts and the teachers will be coming up with the best ways to spend that money!
– Please remember the 24 hour rule for sick children!  There is a ton of illness going around the school and if your child goes home sick, they should not come back to school the next day.
-The new parking lot has been going relatively well!  Please remember to stay in your car in the drop off lane.  One lane closest to the sidewalk is for quick drop offs- please remember to pay attention and keep the line moving.  The inner lane is for passing- please do not stop in the left lane.  If you have someone different picking up your student, please try to explain the routine.  We’ve had a few incidents with people driving over sidewalks or getting out of their cars in the drop off lane.  Team work makes the dream work!
-Conferences are coming up soon and a Sign-Up Genius Link will be coming home for those who want to contribute to teacher meals.  The teachers usually go from excusing children at 3:40 and have only a few minutes before the first meeting with parents.  We will be asking for food to come in earlier this year and coming up with some easier grab & go options for the teachers.  Thanks so much for your support- the teachers are always very appreciative!
-If you did not send in your Art to Remember sheet yet- get it in on Monday!  All projects will be sent out then.  And you’re not committed to purchasing anything once you see the sample come back.
-2017/18 School Year Board & Committee nomination form will be coming home on Friday.  If you- or someone you know may be interested, please send in the sheet.  We will reach out to those nominated and talk to them before placing them on the official ballot.  Here is a copy of the form- board-nomination-form-17-18

Valentines Parties Tuesday afternoon February 14th!

We have a skating party Thursday night- February 16th- Bring the kids to burn off some energy at Terry Hall Roller rink! $5 Admission and $1 skate rental.  6pm-8pm!

February 20th- No School- Mid Winter Break

February 23rd- Jets Fundraiser

March 8th- PTC Evening Meeting!  By popular demand, we are changing the March meeting to an evening one in hopes of getting more parents involved!  It will be 6:30pm at the school.

March 10th- Daddy Daughter Dance- Forms will be coming home next week to buy tickets and volunteer to help!  Remember- do not sign your child out early that day.

Don’t forget the 6th Graders Candy Gram sales for Valentines Day- $1 gets your child a sucker and a note from you delivered to them on Tuesday!  Swing inside the school before or after drop off or pick up, they have a table set just inside the doors!   Snack sales continue on Fridays at lunchtime.  All the proceeds go towards 6th grade camp costs!  Great work 6th graders!

I’m also working on finding the rightful owners of all the found clothing at school.  I posted some pictures on our facebook page last week.  There’s a ton of clothing!  I hope to have it displayed better for the Mother/Son and Daddy/Daughter nights so parents will have a chance to look thru it easily.

BoxTops contest ended Friday and our Coordinator will be counting and going thru them all.  I’ll have class winner info available as soon as possible!  We take BoxTops all year- and now also accepting Spartan Stores/Family Fare/D&W Receipts for their fundraiser program.  Send them in at any time.  There is a container next to the Lost & Found where they can be placed- or send them in with your student and the teachers can help make sure it makes its way to us!

We will be looking for a trophy case to be created soon too!  Mr Roberts is checking on space and hallway codes so we don’t block anything.  I’ll be sending more information as it is available.  If you are handy and can build a nice trophy case, feel free to reach out to me!  Jackie Stone- 616-366-1760

South PTC News 1.29.17

Hey South families!  Heres some info to know-

Mrs. Moore wanted to share some info about 6th graders raising money for camp: The sixth grade classes will be hosting a snack sale each Friday.  The cost is $.25 to to $1 per item. There is small candy, suckers, goldfish, chips, pudding cups, string cheese, Gatorade, flavored water, pickles….  Sales will be during lunch and recess.
Also, starting Feb 6, they’ll be selling candy grams for Valentine’s Day. Handwritten notes and a sucker will be delivered on Valentine’s Day. Sixth grade students will be selling them to parents and students before school, during lunch, and after school the whole week of feb 6. The cost is $1.  (How cute is that!!)

Girls On The Run:: Last call for all 3rd, 4th and 5th grade girls! Registration is will close February 1 for the 2017 season for Girls On The Run! There are two spots still open for our Tuesday/Thursday team.
What is Girls On The Run you ask….well let me give you the run down:
What is it? Girls on the Run is a curriculum based, after-school character development program designed for 3rd – 5th grade girls of ALL fitness and ability levels. The 10-week curriculum attempts to help each girl find and stay true to her REAL self. Groups of 8 to 15 girls meet twice a week with their trained, volunteer coaches to discuss important life lessons while playing fun running games.
Girls on the Run emphasizes independent thinking, making healthy choices, healthy group dynamics and problem solving. The curriculum stresses peer support and doing your best. The program finishes with the girls running or walking in a non-competitive 5k.
South’s 2017 will begin the week of February 27. There will not be practice over spring break. Registration fees are tiered based on family income and range from $15-$145

Our awesome new Grandville shirts will be coming home with kids tomorrow (Monday!) Please check your kiddos backpack when they get home.

BoxTops contest is in full swing!  Completed sheets or baggies with BoxTops are due back to school on February 10th to count towards the classroom contest.  Class that collects the most BoxTops will win a pizza & ice cream party! Please make sure if you send in baggies of BoxTops that it has students name & teacher name on it so we know who to give the credit!

We will also start collecting Family Fare and D&W receipts to be saved for their Direct your Dollars program.  If you shop at those stores, please send in your original receipts with your children to be dropped off in the office to the PTC mailbox.  Once we have reached $150,000 we earn $1,000!  So send those receipts in to us anytime!

Art to Remember papers will be coming home soon if your child wants to create something and have it made onto a keepsake like mugs, calendars or mouse pads.  Lots of options are available and info will be coming home this next week.

Pastry Puffin fundraiser went really well.  Thanks to everyone that participated and picked them up Friday after school.  If you weren’t able to make it, the last remaining ones are in the school kitchen freezer.  Please stop by the office and someone can get them for you.  Thanks to everyone who participated- we raised $3,400!

Thanks to everyone who participates in our dining fundraisers too, those add up and make a difference towards what we can afford to pay for! (And I know I’m always ready for a night to get takeout AND have portion of the proceeds go to the school- if we are eating out anyways, it might as well go towards a great cause!)

Valentines parties will be February 14th!  Teachers or room parents will be getting info out very soon if they have not already.  Room parents remember you can get reimbursed for up to $25 of party supplies if you cannot get items donated by other class parents.  Save your receipts and there is a form in the PTC mailbox.  Someone in the office can help you find them if you’re not familiar.

We will be looking for key positions to be filled on our board or as coordinators for the 2017/18 school year.  If you are interested or want to nominate someone, please feel free to attend one of the upcoming PTC meetings or contact any of us on the board (Alison Edidin, Victoria Talsma, Kristy Gibney, Samantha Siegert or myself Jackie Stone)

South PTC News 1.15.17

We had a great PTC Meeting on Friday January 13th, Thank you so much to all the parents who attended!

We are happy to report the PTC board & members in attendance Friday 1.13 voted in favor of funding Orff instruments for our students at South.  Thanks to our fundraising efforts this year we were able to fund a Soprano Xylophone and a Soprano Metallophone.  We also decided to go ahead & fund 2 more instruments- a soprano glockenspiel and an alto glockenspiel.  The music teachers and the Grandville Education Foundation have made a 5 year plan to fund these instruments and many more for each of the 7 schools.

In addition, our fundraising efforts have funded a lot more great things recently- new balls (Basketball, Football and Kickball) for the playground/gym!  We also purchased a drone for the upper El classes to use!  And you may remember we voted to approve $2500 for 6th grade camp!

This is AMAZING!  Thank you everyone who participates in all the fundraisers- from Spirit days, to Dining nights and Walk-A-Thon to purchasing Pastry Puffins– These all Add up and make a HUGE Difference for what we can do for our students at South!

Speaking of Walk-A-Thon…Mrs Timmers Class is going bowling Friday (Pizza, pop and 2 games per student) as the winners of the Walk-A-Thon earlier this year!  Have fun kids, thanks for all your hard work!

There will be a Box Tops contest starting very soon!  The next deadline for us to submit BoxTops is the end of February!  There will be forms coming home soon for you to attach your Box Tops to, or send them to school in ziploc baggies with your students name, teacher name & grade on it.  There will be a pizza and ice cream party for the class that collects the most, so make sure to ask friends & family to save their Box Tops!

FRIDAY FRIDAY FRIDAY!  Carnival!  I’m so excited its almost here!  I’m in my final preparations mode.  Thanks to the parents who have offered to help make games, send in donations or volunteer.  We still have more open slots for volunteers later in the night- we hope you’ll take an hour shift to run a game, collect tickets and hand out prizes.  It will be a really fun night! We will have pizza from Jets for sale in the cafeteria.  I have a ton of fun games planned for each of the classrooms.  Games are 1-4 tickets and tickets will be sold for .25 cents each.
Please bring CASH!  Carnival is 4:30pm-8pm!
We realize parking will be crazy, please be courteous to our neighbors and don’t block driveways.
We have a great video game trailer coming too and students who sold over 7 boxes of Pastry Puffins will have a turn in the trailer for free.  Other students can pay tickets like the other games for their turn.

HATCHIMALS!  Guess what?  I have TWO brand new Hatchimals that we will raffle off Friday night.  Seperate raffle ticket 1 for $1 or 6 tickets for $5. Bring Cash!

We will have tons of prizes and fun games all over the school, face painting and balloon animals, popcorn & cotton candy!  We hope everyone can make it for a fun night out!

We are working on a March date for an evening PTC Meeting due to popular request.  We will communicate once we have one nailed down!

T-Shirt order has been placed and once I have a date of shirts in hand, we will let everyone know!

We took final tally of the Pastry Puffin order forms and we sold 474 boxes!  Way to go!  People have some delicious product coming their way! Once I have delivery info, I’ll pass it along!

South PTC News 1.9.17

Its Texas Roadhouse Fundraiser night tonight!  Bring the FLYER and present it for South to receive a portion of the proceeds!

We received a good amount of t-shirt order forms back, we are still missing a few and hope to have every student accounted for by Wednesday this week.  Remember- the student shirts are free!  If you want to order a shirt for yourself or siblings that do not attend South- the form is ptc-shirt-order-from  Send the completed form and money in by Wednesday morning (Firm deadline).

Pastry Puffin Order forms are due back this Wednesday the 11th.  Please make sure to send in completed forms and checks!

PTC Meeting is this Friday the 13th!  Join us at 9am in the teachers lounge.  Everyone is welcome & encouraged to attend!  We will talk about the carnival quickly coming up, get an update from Principal Ryan Roberts and begin discussing other events.

“Congrats to South’s very own sixth grade Angry Animals VEX IQ Team for making it to state today! These boys also won the Teamwork Award and the Excellence Award today.All 3 South teams did a great job today. All of them made it to the final round playoffs and had some of their highest scores of the season. Congratulations to all of these boys for a wonderful season. They should be extremely proud of their performances today. Let’s celebrate the great job these coaches, parents, and especially the boys did to make this season a success!”

Hey did you hear we have a CARNIVAL coming up?!  I’ve been working a ton on this event and am SO EXCITED about it!  Friday January 20th from 4:30pm-8:00pm at South! I have made a ton of games and am so thankful to the parents stepping up to help!  Bring CASH and buy tickets for your kiddos to play games and win prizes.  We will also have Jets Pizza for sale in the cafeteria.  Fun for the whole family!  We hope you can make it!!
And if you’re able, I need volunteers.  One hour shifts! Buy your kids some tickets and let them play for an hour while you volunteer!
If we dont have volunteers, I’ll have to close down rooms early, and I really don’t wanna do that!

Calling all 3rd, 4th and 5th grade girls! Registration is open for the 2017 season for Girls On The Run!
What is it? Girls on the Run is a curriculum based, after-school character development program designed for 3rd – 5th grade girls of ALL fitness and ability levels. The 10-week curriculum attempts to help each girl find and stay true to her REAL self. Groups of 8 to 15 girls meet twice a week with their trained, volunteer coaches to discuss important life lessons while playing fun running games.
Girls on the Run emphasizes independent thinking, making healthy choices, healthy group dynamics and problem solving. The curriculum stresses peer support and doing your best. The program finishes with the girls running or walking in a non-competitive 5k.
South’s 2017 will begin the week of February 27. There will not be practice over spring break. Registration fees are tiered based on family income and range from $15-$145
