General Notes

The 2015/2016 South Elementary PTC  Board thanks you for your support this year. The PTC (Parents, Teachers and Children) worked hard to provide your child with a great year.  Whether you were able to attend the monthly meetings, volunteer in your child’s classroom or at a special event, or make a donation, you continue to be a valuable part of South Elementary’s PTC.  We greatly appreciate all you do to help South Elementary PTC, the students, and the staff succeed.  Please see the attached End of Year Letter.  2015-2016 End of Year Letter

Reminders for the Summer

Remember to continue to collect your BoxTops!!  There will be a contest in the Fall.

If you have not already done so, please consider downloading Shoparoo, a free iPhone and Android app that turns pictures of your shopping receipts into cash donations to South PTC.  Anyone can join and choose to donate to South Elementary PTC. South Elementary PTC has earned $100 so far.  We are only 9,300 points away from $200.  South PTC has until August 31, 2016 to earn points towards our first fundraising check.

Monday, June 6th

The 1st Graders will be taking a Field Trip to the Critter Barn today.

Tuesday, June 7th

This morning is the Annual 6th Grade Breakfast.

Wednesday, June 8th

Today is the Annual 2nd Grade Mixer at 1:30 p.m.

Thursday, June 9th

Today is the Annual 6th Grade Roll-N-Bowl.

Friday, June 10th

The Annual All School Assembly will take place at 9:00 a.m. today.  Principal Roberts will announce the recipient of the Principal’s Award as well as acknowledge other students and their accomplishments.

Last day of school!! Early dismissal at 11:40 a.m.

Report cards will be sent home in your son/daughter’s Friday Folder today.

Looking Forward to Next Year

The 2016/2017 South PTC Board is currently planning for next school year.  The Board has already met once and plans to meet several more times over the summer.

South PTC has partnered with Five Below for two amazing fundraisers next year. The first Five Below Fundraiser will take place prior to the start of school: August 5th to August 11th.  South PTC will receive 10% of all purchases made that week when accompanied by the attached Flyer.  Five Below Flyer  A copy of the Flyer will also be coming home by regular mail this summer.  Please consider purchasing Back-to-School supplies during this period.  Not only does Five Below have great prices, but your purchases will help South Elementary.

Lastly, Orange Leaf has already announced it 2016 Froyo Spirit Challenge.  The Challenge starts with Round I on October 2nd!!  South Elementary will face Grandville Central in Round I and the total number of teams involved has increased to 16!!  Let’s go SOUTH!!  More information will be provided as we approach the start date.

Thursday, June 2nd

Today is the 3rd Grade Field Trip to the Landfill/Recycling Center/Millenium Park

Today is also the 2nd Grade Field Trip to Wedgewood Park (in Grandville) and to the West Michigan Whitecaps.

There is also a 6th Grade Field Trip today to reunite the 6th Graders with their friends from West Elementary.  Students will be walking to West in the afternoon.

Today is Orchestra Fitting for the 5th graders.

The Kindergarten Open House for 2016/2017 is tonight at 6:00 p.m.

Tonight is the final Pizza Hut Night .  Please join us at the Grandville Pizza Hut on 28th Street.   Remember, South PTC receives 20% of sales from 11:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. South PTC can earn a percentage of sales for lunch and late-night dining. A copy of the Pizza Hut flyer came home in yourstudent’s Friday Folder last week and is available here:  Pizza Hut May 2016 Please feel free to makes copies for your non-South friends and neighbors.  Sales can be dine-in, carry-out, or delivery.

Today is the 3rd Grade Pen Pal Picnic.

Thursday, May 26

Joe to Go Volunteer Appreciation will take place from 7:45 to 8:20 a.m.

Today is the Family Picnic.  Please feel free to join your students between 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. on the playground for lunch.

Today is also Field Day. The daily schedule is as follows:

Classes with AM events

Lancto, Doxstader, Uhl, Hjort, Rieger, Baer, Timmer, Moore

Classes with PM Events

Heyboer, Hyde, Karnehm, Messina, Barton, Vezino, Boersma, Dohrmann, Wellman-Bowman

The Tug O War will take place at 3:00 p.m.

Lastly, in the past, the PTC has provided snow cones to students on Field Day. This year, Orange Leaf is providing a Fro Yo Party (one 2 oz frozen yogurt with topping per South student) as a second place prize from the fall Orange Leaf Fro Yo Spirit Challenge.  Thanks you Orange Leaf!!

Weekly Update May 16-20

Monday, May 16th

6th Graders leave for 6th Grade Camp at 8:30 a.m.  Remember that students will need a sack lunch today. All other meals will be provided.

Tuesday, May 17th

6th Graders will be at 6th Grade Camp.

Wednesday, May 18th

6th Graders return from 6th Grade Camp.  Please make sure arrangements have been made for your student upon arrival to school.

Tonight is the Michigan Week City Barbeque from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Grandville Library Amphitheater.

Thursday, May 19th

The 5th Grade Safeties will be rewarded today for their hard work with a trip to a West Michigan White Caps game. Thank for the Grandville Police Department and the South PTC for making this possible.

Friday, May 20th

The ASD Music Performance is this morning at 8:45 a.m.

Sports Physicals will be available today for 6th Graders from 5:00 to 7:00 PM in the auditorium of the Grandville Middle School.  The cost is $25, cash or check to Dr. Diana Dillman.

Friday, May 13

Today is the final PTC Meeting of the 2015/2016 school year.  The PTC meets at 9:00 a.m. in the Office Conference Room.    All parents and guardians are welcome and encouraged to attend.

General Notes

Last Friday, Mrs. Rieger’s 2nd Grade Class had their Annual Hat Show. It was great to see so many parents, grandparents and family in attendance.  AND the hats looked awesome.

Teacher Appreciation Week

Teacher Appreciation Week is this week.  A Committee of PTC volunteers has organized a week of wonderful events for the South Staff.  This year, the theme is Farmers’ Market.  Market Bites will be available on Monday and Thursday, breakfast and 15-minute massages on Tuesday, a luncheon courtesy of Dynamic Family Chiropractic on Wednesday, and Farm Fresh Favor on Friday.  In addition, Room Parents may have organized teacher gifts and families are always welcome to celebrate the teacher and staff as they wish.  Remember, participation is voluntary.

Monday, May 2

Tonight is a PTC dining fundraiser at Texas Roadhouse.  The South PTC will earn 10% of sales accompanied by a  Flyer between 4:00 and 9:00 p.m.  Hope to see you there. Texas Roadhouse (5.2.16)

Tuesday, May 3

Today is Election Day. The Friends for Education Committee wants to remind you that Grandville Public Schools has a Sinking Fund Renewal on the ballot and would appreciate if you would take the time to vote.  This Renewal is the only item on the ballot and voting should take no more than 10 minutes.  Voters are being asked to approve a renewal of 1.4 mills for 10 years. Wednesday, May 4

Both the 3rd and 6th Graders will be taking the MSTEP today.

Today is the last Popcorn Friday of the school year. 

Both the 3rd and 6th Graders will be taking the MSTEP today.

Today is the Y5/ Kindergarten Field Trip to the Pony Farm.

Monday, April 25th

Today the 5th Graders are going to the Grandville Library for a Meet and Greet with author Floyd Cooper.

This evening is the P2P Fun Night (Peer to Peer Group) .

Tuesday, April 26th

Today, there will be an All Band Practice for 6th Grade band participants.

Both the 3rd and 6th Graders will be taking the MSTEP today.

Tonight there is a 6th Grade Band Concert at 7:00 p.m. at the Grandville High School Auditorium.

Thursday, April 28th

Today is the 2nd Grade Community Field Trip.

Friday, April 29th

Today is the 2nd Grade Hat Show in Mrs. Rieger’s Classroom at 3:00 p.m.

General Notes

The 2016-2017 District Calendar is now available.  Follow the link for more information:  2016-2017 District Calendar  Please note the changes to various breaks, as well as the additional of several student half-days.

The PTC Board for next year is as follows:  Victoria Talsma/Alison Edison: Co-Presidents, Treasurer: Kristy Gibney, Secretary: Kristy Gibney (Meeting minutes and Newsletters), Volunteer Coordinator: Sam Siegert, and Activities Coordinator: Jackie Stone.  Kristy would like to thank both Alison and Jackie for volunteering to assist with the Secretary responsibilities  next year.  Alison has agreed to manage the PTC Facebook Group and Page and Jackie has agreed to manage the PTC Blog.

This morning, the 6th Graders will be scheduling classes for 7th Grade.

The 5th Graders will have MSTEP testing today.

Thursday, April 21

Today, at 1:00 p.m., auditions will be held for 6th Graders for Middle School Musical Theater. Good luck students.

The 5th Graders will have MSTEP testing today.

Friday, April 22

The 6th Graders will be going to the Middle School from 8:50 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. for Middle School Orientation today.

The Second Annual Art & Chocolate Walk is tonight form 5:00 to 9:00 p.m., featuring pieces from students from more than 12 area schools at 20 different downtown venues along with interactive art, art performances and live music. New for this year’s event is featured local artist Robert Shangle, who goes by the name LiveStatue and performs painted in gold as a live statue. Shangle also has been a part of ArtPrize in Grand Rapids.  Art and musical performances are free. A $2 “Slips & Bits” card is required for the chocolate and beverage tasting stations. One card covers one person for all 20 stations.  Cards can be purchased at Grandville City Hall, at 3195 Wilson Ave. SW, or downtown on the evening of the event
