Orange Leaf Froyo Spirit Challenge Results-Congratulations South!!! We are moving on to Round 2. We will face Grandville Central and Jenison Pinewood in Round 2, October 18 to October 24. So far, we have raised $196.98 for South (20% of our sales). Remember, we start Round 2 back at zero. Again, thank you to everyone who made purchases last week!!!
The PTC has scheduled a school-wide Carnival for January. Carnivals are fun, family events, but require the assistance of LOTS of volunteers. A committee must be formed to begin the planning immediately. Please contact Dustin Amerson at firstname.lastname@example.org or Kennedy Bisbee at email@example.com if you are interested and able to help.
The PTC is also looking for volunteers to help with Popcorn Fridays. Alison Edidin has volunteered to be in charge of the activity, but additional volunteers are needed each month to help pop, bag, and distribute popcorn to the classrooms. If you are able to help, please contact Alison at 616-808-9189. The next Popcorn Friday is October 23rd.
Copy Crew is a new service which will be available to South teachers and staff this school year. Volunteers are needed each week to make copies, laminate, or do other office activities for teachers and staff. If you are able to help, please sign up at Copy Crew. The time commitment each week will vary from 15 minutes to 2 hours depending on the needs of teachers and staff.
The Fall Book Fair is a week away. As always, Book Fair requires many hands. We invite parents to help with set up, classroom shopping, Family Night, and tear down. It’s a great opportunity to celebrate reading at South and meet new families in our school community. Thank you in advance for all of your help! Please use the link below to sign up to volunteer. Volunteer Information: South Elementary places a high priority on parent involvement and appreciates its parent volunteers. Volunteering in the classroom is a valuable experience for both the parents and our children. Volunteering enables parents to become familiar with daily activities in the classroom and in the school. Volunteering also provides an opportunity for the teacher to work with smaller groups of students. Your willingness to contribute is highly regarded by the South staff. While many schools, if not most, enforce a strict “No Sibling Rule,” South Elementary does not to want to discourage any parent from volunteering because they are caring for a young sibling. The concern, as with everything that happens in the school, is that the quality of instruction within the classroom is not jeopardized. When deciding if you will bring a younger sibling with you when you volunteer, please be mindful of the tasks you will be performing, whether it be making copies in the office or working one-on-one with students in the classroom or hallway. Regardless, please bring quiet entertainment for the younger sibling so that your primary focus can be the students. As always, when entering the school, for any reason, please sign-in in the office and wear a Visitor Badge at all times.

Today is MI/MSU Sprit Day. Please wear either University of Michigan or Michigan State colors today to show your support for your favorite team as they face each other in football on Saturday October 17th. Students may vote for their favorite team with $1, payable to his or her teacher Friday morning. Students may make additional votes for $1 each. Let’s see which team is South’s favorite. The flag of the winning school will hang out front (if we can find someone with the flags) and we will play the winning school’s fight song at the end of the day. Also, each student who voted for the winning school will win an Airhead candy. Reminder: Your child DOES NOT have to bring a $1 to wear University of Michigan or Michigan State colors.
