South Elementary PTC News 8.31.16

Its the final countdown before school starts!  Here are some important things to know!

First Day 9/6

Tuesday September 6th is the first day and also a half day- so no lunch is needed unless your child goes to Treehouse. Dismissal is at 11:36am.

As a reminder the bell schedule for Regular Days is:
Young Fives: 8:28-11:36 a.m.
Elementary: 8:28 a.m. to 3:41 p.m.

5th Grade Safeties

The fifth grade safety post assignments will be posted on the main office window by Thursday (9/1) afternoon. Safeties are expected to be at their posts on the first day of school by 7:50am.

Grandville High School cheer team is putting on a tailgate September 9th 

The cheer team is once again hosting this fun annual event for families with elementary-age students!  Sept. 9: East, South, Central and Grand View Elementary families are encouraged to attend. The tailgate is from 5-7 p.m. at GHS in front of the athletic entrance. The theme is throwback night (wear old Grandville gear or old jerseys if you like). The cost is $20 per family ($5 per person up to 3 people, $20 for four or more family members). Price includes a hotdog, chips, beverage and cookie and admission into the game!  There will be raffle prizes, a visit from the Bulldog mascot and Bubba the Bulldog, face painting, bag games and lots of fun!  Tickets for these two tailgates may be purchased at the elementary school offices, Community Education office or the GHS athletic office.

PTC Meeting

The first PTC Meeting will be Friday September 9th at 9am in the Office Conference Room.  All are welcome!  We will be voting on the PTC budget for the 2016-2017 school year.

Tuesday, May 10

Sports Physicals will be available today for 6th Graders from 5:00 to 7:00 PM in the auditorium of the Grandville Middle School.  The cost is $25, cash or check to Dr. Diana Dillman.

Friday, May 13

Today is the final PTC Meeting of the 2015/2016 school year.  The PTC meets at 9:00 a.m. in the Office Conference Room.    All parents and guardians are welcome and encouraged to attend.

Welcome Back South students, families, and staff. Hope everyone had a wonderful Spring Break.

Wednesday, April 13

Tonight is the South Elementary PTC Buffalo Wild Wings Dining Fundraiser. South PTC earns 20% of all purchases made today. This includes carryout and dine-in. A copy of the Flyer MUST be presented to your server at the time of purchase. Flyers will come home with your students in Friday Folders and can be found here.   Wednesday Nights are also “Kids Nights” at Buffalo Wild Wings. All kids meals (dine-in only) are $2.49 and come with an ice cream sundae bar. Balloon animals, crafts, and a kids raffle are usually available as well.

Tonight is a South Skating Party at Tarry Hall from 6-8 pm.  The cost of admission is $5.00 and all skate rental is $1.00 extra.  Tarry Hall offers drinks and snacks for sale.

Today is the 7th PTC Meeting of the 2015/2016 school year.  The PTC meets at 9:00 a.m. in the Office Conference Room.    All parents and guardians are welcome and encouraged to attend.  Please come and meet the new PTC Board for the 2016/2017 School Year.

Weekly Update for February 8-12

General Notes

6th Grade Water Drive: The 6th graders exceeded their goal of 61 cases of water as South students and families brought in more than 111 cases.  The water was delivered to Art Van on Friday for final delivery to Flint. Thank you to everyone who donated.

The South PTC and Gents and Dolls Dance Committee is looking for Volunteers for the Gents and Dolls Dance.  Please consider helping.  Follow the link below to sign up: Gents and Dolls Volunteer Sign-Up  The deadline to purchase tickets is Friday, February 12th.  Gents and Dolls Invitation  Please note that this event is for Fathers, Uncles, Friends, etc. and our female students.  If mothers would like to be present during the event, please sign up to volunteer. If you sign up, you will be assigned a task or station.  It is the hope of the Dance Committee that the only mothers in the gymnasium are volunteering at the event.

Time to clean out closets and toy boxes. The Library is looking for your gently used stuffed animals.

Volunteers are needed each week for Copy Crew.  Volunteers will make copies, laminate, or do other office activities for teachers and staff.  If you are able to help, please sign up at Copy Crew.  The time commitment each day will vary from 15 minutes to 2 hours depending on the needs of teachers and staff.

Please note that registration for Girls on the Run will now close on February 12, 2016. The Tuesday/Thursday Team is full, but opening remain on the Monday/Wednesday Team. Each Team must have a minimum of 5 girls. The maximum number of girls per team is 15. Co-coaches are still needed, particularly for the Monday/Wednesday Team. REMINDER:  Please review the attached Map and Guidelines which outlines the Drop-off and Pick-up procedures at South.  This information has been posted to the blog and has been sent home with students in Friday Folders.  Student Drop-off and Pick-up at South can run smoothly, efficiently, and safely if ALL parents follow a few simple guidelines.  Most importantly, if you are in a drop off line, you must remain in your vehicle.  If you must exit your vehicle to assist your student for any reason, please park in a designated parking space.  South Drop-Off and Pick-Up Map

Date Change: The Mother/Son Event at 3 Mile Project has been moved to March 15, 2016.  Please look for more information in your son’s Friday Folder soon.

The Third-Graders participated in the annual Eye Dissection last week.  Looks like everyone had a great time.

Today is the second of two Count Days during the 2015/2016 school year.  The number of students in attendance will determine the amount Grandville School District will receive in per student state funding for programs, operations, teachers and other staff.

Friday, February 12

Today is the 5th PTC Meeting of the 2015/2016 school year.  The PTC meets at 9:00 a.m. in the Office Conference Room.    All parents and guardians are welcome and encouraged to attend.  Please note that the PTC Board is currently looking for enthusiastic parents to serve as Board members for the 2016/2017 school year.

Registration for Girls on the Run closes today.

Today is the deadline to purchase tickets for the Gents and Dolls Dance.

The classroom Valentine’s Parties will take place today.  Thank you to our Room Parents for making this an exciting day and to all of the Classroom Volunteers who help to make the parties special for the students.    If you are planning to volunteer at a classroom Valentine’s Day Party, you must sign-in at the front entrance.  As you know, your students’ safety is a top priority at South and it is important that staff be able to determine not only who is in the building, but where they can be found at all times.  Further, due to classroom sizes, the number of party volunteers, the use of hallways for party games, along with the fact that parties may be taking place at different times (i.e. some students will be receiving educational instruction while other class parties are ongoing), it is important that volunteers remain with the class for which they have volunteered.

Tomorrow is the last day to bring in new, unwrapped toys for Toys for Tots.  Thank you to everyone who has already donated. Your generosity is much appreciated.

Tomorrow is also “Shop with a Cop” day. For $1, students can wear a hat to school.  All monies raised will be used to fund “Shop with a Cop,” which provides South students-in-need with $100 to shop at Walmart for the holidays.  There is also a Donation Jar in the Office for any additional donations.

As you know, the Senior Executive Board in conjunction with the National Honor Society of Grandville High School is partnering with Toys for Tots this holiday season.  Students at the High School, Middle School, and all Grandville Elementary Schools are collecting new, unwrapped  toys to help less fortunate children experience the joy of Christmas. Toys will be collected through December 11th. Special thank you to everyone who has already donated. South currently has more than 25 toys under its Christmas tree.  Your generosity is much appreciated.

Orange Leaf Froyo Spirit Challenge Round 3

After a tough competition this past week, South Elementary placed second in the 1st Annual Orange Leaf Froyo Spirit Challenge.  First place Jenison Pinewood wins by just $8.35.  Due to your support, the South PTC will receive a check for $676.28.  In addition, Orange Leaf is providing a Froyo Party for ALL South students.  The PTC will work with Froyo to schedule this party in the spring.  Thank you again for all of your purchases AND please don’t be too hard on Principal Roberts when you see him walking the halls in a Jenison t-shirt.

Food Drive

During the week of November 9th, South Elementary is sponsoring a Food Drive to benefit local food pantries.  A table will be set up in the lobby and donations will be accepted until Friday, November 13th. For more information, please see a copy of the note that was sent home last week.  South Food Drive

Shoparoo

If you have not already done so, please consider downloading Shoparoo, a free iPhone and Android app that turns pictures of your shopping receipts into donations.

Join using referral code GON56255 to earn a bonus 100 Roo points after submitting their first receipt.  Share the app with friends and family and if they sign using your referral code, you will earn an extra 150 Roo points. Anyone can join and choose to donate to South.

In two months , and with 23 receipt submitting supporters, South has earned 27,035 Roo points and has now earned $50 and is more than half way to $100.

Please join us tonight for South’s first Noodles & Company Fundraiser from 4:00 to 9:00 p.m.  Noodles & Company 11-11  South PTC will earn 25% of all sales during this time.  Please remember to present your flyer at the time of purchase.

Thursday, November 12

As the class that raised the most money during the Walk-a-Thon, Ms. Moore’s class will be celebrating with a bowling party at Park Center Lanes in Wyoming today. There is no fee to students as this reward will be paid for by the PTC.

Orange Leaf Froyo Spirit Challenge Update

Don’t forget Round 1 of the Orange Leaf Froyo Spirit Challenge runs through Saturday, October 10th.  As of Wednesday night, South was ahead of Grandview by approximately $42.59.   Remember, if we defeat Grandview this week,  we move on to Round 2 and will face the two other winning schools from Round 1.  Let’s Go SOUTH!!!

 

Weekly Update for October 4-10

Walk-A-Thon and Family BBQ

The PTC Board would like to thank all our South students, staff, and families for making the  Walk-a-Thon and Family BBQ such HUGE successes. The PTC Board also thanks ALL of the wonderful volunteers who gave unselfishly of their time at the Family BBQ.   Final results for the Walk-a-Thon fundraiser will be posted in the October PTC Newsletter.

Orange Leaf Froyo Spirit Challenge

Round 1 of the Orange Leaf Froyo Spirit Challenge starts Sunday, October 4 and runs until Saturday, October 10. The following rules have been established by Orange Leaf:

1. Each school will have a bucket on the counter. When making a purchase, please ask for a receipt, write South on the back of the receipt, and place it into the South bucket.

2. South will receive 20% of all sales for receipts placed in its bucket. This includes the PURCHASE of gift cards, so long as the receipt for the gift card purchase is placed in the South bucket. PLEASE NOTE: We receive no credit when paying with gift cards. Checks will be issued each week to the participating schools for 20% of their sales receipts from that particular week.

3. The school with the most sales based on the receipts in its bucket will move on to the next Round.

4. Round 2 takes place October 18-24. Each team in Round 2 will begin at zero sales.

5. Round 3, the final Round, will take place from November 1-7. Each team in Round 3 will begin at zero sales.

6. The winning school will be announced on November 8th and receive a $500 bonus.

It is almost time for the Fall Book Fair.  As always, Book Fair requires many hands. We invite parents to help with set up, classroom shopping, Family Night, and tear down. Today is Popcorn Friday.  On Popcorn Fridayseach student receives a bag of popcorn, compliments of the PTC.
