Weekly Update for February 29-March 4

General Notes

March is Go Orange Month.   The South 3rd grade students will be continuing a 7 year tradition by collecting specific food items to assemble Supper Packs for the Kids Food Basket this month. Sack Suppers are evening meals that provide a well-rounded meal to children who may not otherwise receive  the daily nutrition that is so critical to the development of their brains and bodies.  The Kids Food Basket serves more than 7,000 children in each weekday in West Michigan.  March 24th is Go Orange Day.  3rd Graders have been encouraged to wear orange, the color of hunger awareness on March 24th. The PTC encourages all South students to wear orange on March 24th.

Art to Remember Order Forms came home with your students(s) last Friday, Please note that all Orders must be returned by March 9th.  Checks should be made payable to South PTC.  You may also Order on-line at ArtToRemember.com using your student’s on-line Order code printed on the back of the Order Form.

Volunteers Needed

It has been suggested that the PTC consider the use of the Scrip program as a way to earn money for our school. The Scrip program would allow South PTC to purchase gift certificates, “or scrips,” from popular retailers at a discount. Parents then buy the gift certificates from the PTC at face value. The difference in price is kept by the PTC. Parents spend the “scrip” at the retailer, where it’s worth the full face value.  A Volunteer is needed to investigate the enrollment process and take action. Volunteers would also be responsible for creating communications to parents regarding the program and would be responsible for maintaining the “scrips” available for purchase. If you are interested, please sign up here: Scrip Program Volunteer

Volunteers are needed each week for Copy Crew.  Volunteers will make copies, laminate, or do other office activities for teachers and staff.  If you are able to help, please sign up at Copy Crew.  The time commitment each day will vary from 15 minutes to 2 hours depending on the needs of teachers and staff.

Due to construction, the South Library will be closing May 1st. In order to get the space ready for construction, the books must be boxed and the wall shelves covered.  If you are able to assist, please sign up here: Library Volunteer

Volunteer Information: South Elementary places a high priority on parent involvement and appreciates its parent volunteers. Volunteering in the classroom is a valuable experience for both the parents and our children. Volunteering enables parents to become familiar with daily activities in the classroom and in the school. Volunteering also provides an opportunity for the teacher to work with smaller groups of students. Your willingness to contribute is highly regarded by the South staff. While many schools, if not most, enforce a strict “No Sibling Rule,” South Elementary does not to want to discourage any parent from volunteering because they are caring for a young sibling. The concern, as with everything that happens in the school, is that the quality of instruction within the classroom is not jeopardized. When deciding if you will bring a younger sibling with you when you volunteer, please be mindful of the tasks you will be performing, whether it be making copies in the office or working one-on-one with students in the classroom or hallway. Regardless, please bring quiet entertainment for the younger sibling so that your primary focus can be the students.  As always, when entering the school, for any reason, please sign-in in the office and wear a Visitor Badge at all times.
